In 2009 I moved to Christmas Island, a remote island in the Indian Ocean north of Australia, where I lived for 3 years. Being the only designer in a small community gave me the opportunity to work at a variety of scales and develop a broad set of skills. I designed everything from a bus stop shelter that doubled as a beach pavilion, to a resort, to a permaculture farm and community center, to city master planning. Sustainability and energy efficiency has always been a driving factor of my life and work, but living in a closed ecosystem gave me new insight to the full effect that humans have on the environment. I could see the amount of diesel that was shipped to the island to power the generators and the extent of the waste stream that accumulated on the island.

In North America we have similar problems at a larger scale, so when I moved back to Vermont and joined DWA in 2014, I continued to strive professionally to make the built environment better. I became a Certified Passive House Designer, joined the Northern Vermont Building Science Group, and in 2016 I joined the Burlington 2030 District Board, an organization that strives to reduce Burlington’s energy Consumption by 50% by 2030. At Duncan Wisniewski Architecture I’ve taken on the role of Sustainability Coordinator, where we endeavor to be at the forefront of high performance buildings.
