Duncan Wisniewski Architecture / About Us

Thoughtful
architecture.
Meaningful places.

Since 1985, we've been designing spaces that balance people, purpose, community, and the environment.

01 / Our Approach

Design is about
finding balance.

We approach architecture as the integration of practical needs, personal aspirations, public responsibility, and the poetic qualities that make a place meaningful.

As a deliberately small studio, we cultivate strong relationships with our clients and give each project the attention and collaboration it deserves.

Community engagement, sustainable thinking, and a commitment to enduring design guide our work.

Design is the art of finding a single solution to multiple desires. — Mark Wilson Jones

Four decades of community-focused architecture.

Established in 1985, Duncan Wisniewski Architecture is a Vermont-based studio dedicated to community-oriented architecture and sustainable solutions.

Led by Principals Taryn Barrett and Sam Beall, our team works closely with clients across a broad range of projects, from residential renovations to multifamily housing, workplaces, retail spaces, healthcare facilities, and neighborhood planning.

We believe that careful listening, thoughtful collaboration, and responsible design can create places that positively contribute to the communities around them.

03 / Our Footprint

Rooted in Vermont.
Connected to community.

Our projects are shaped by the communities, landscapes, and environments in which they exist. Explore the places where our work has made an impact.

04 / Architecture

Architecture
is a process,
not a formula.

Architecture emerges through an ongoing exchange between design ambitions, practical conditions, and the evolving needs of a project. It is a process of investigation, refinement, and discovery.

From the earliest conversations, we consider context, program, performance, material choices, and long-term implications. The most elegant solutions bring these considerations together rather than treating them as separate problems.

Decisions that appear small can shape a project's energy performance, operating costs, and architectural expression for decades. By addressing these questions early, we can develop more integrated and responsible solutions.

05 / Sustainability

Building for
a better future.

Less energy.
Greater longevity.
Better places.

We embrace passive design as a foundation for buildings that consume fewer resources, support their occupants, and serve their communities over the long term.

Our approach draws upon the principles of Passive House, emphasizing high-performance building envelopes, efficient systems, and careful consideration of a building's relationship with its environment.

Sustainability is not simply a feature of architecture. It is a responsibility that informs the decisions we make throughout the design process.
