A common building type in rural Vermont is the composition of house, ell and attached bar. Building upon this idea, and maintaining the vernacular consistency, the “house” is white painted clapboards, complete with dormers (used to bring light into interior first floor spaces), business office and a large window-walled waiting room provides patient access to the exam rooms. The “ell” houses the exam rooms, and the “barn” completes the ancillary functions of the animal hospital and also includes the PT Practice. The PT entry, centered on the barn’s south facade, is a shared entry with animal hospital staff. A key programmatic feature of both buildings is the necessity for exam rooms to have dual access points, the public side for clients to bring their pets, and the private side for doctors, which connects to “back-of-house” veterinary functions such as laboratory, surgery, ICU, kennel, etc. A custom masonry dog wash was designed for this building and repeated in the second building in Bristol, VT. Parking behind the building (zoning rules don't allow in front) and requiring all staff and clients to walk around is not acceptable, especially when clients are often transporting ill pets in carriers, or during Vermont’s ling winter season. The prominent waiting room gable window adjacent to the entrance drive alerts clients and visitors to rear entrance. A key program feature for this client was to separate the waiting spaces into cat and dog areas, to lessen anxiety for cats waiting to be seen. All exam rooms feature only one entrance, but the hall serving them is separated from public functions of waiting and retail. Back-of-house functions include laboratory, surgery suite, kennel, ICU, etc., all of which connect to a separate staff entrance, which also connects to small second story staff meeting space and mechanical room. The white clapboard finish and black windows clad a crisp and inviting form along a busy highway, only about a half-mile from an interstate highway exchange. A dedicated staff is trying to accomplish this mission in a completely inadequate building that feels more like a jail. The agricultural heritage is still present, but it has been largely marginalized in favor of neighborhoods and commercial districts. As South Burlington seeks to CENTER itself, we feel it’s appropriate to reintroduce that agricultural heritage. Our proposed chicken coops are migratory, moving through the site as needed to provide the chickens with fresh grass and bugs to eat. A coop can function on its own; the coops can also gang together to enclose larger spaces. Each coop design is different, an individual expression of its author. Together they create space and place. During each day the flexible fencing unfolds to create the chicken yard. At night, the fencing retracts and protects each coop from predators. The daily rhythms of opening, moving and closing each coop would be adopted by interested residents, creating community through shared responsibility. The imaginary sloping site was bound by a bike path to the North and a lake on the South. Taryn and Arthur’s concept was to celebrate the idea of an event by creating a foldable building in which the act of expanding for an event was an event in itself. The structure is shaped like a fan deck with 4 telescoping sections that fold into one permanent structure. When open the building holds an indoor auditorium. When closed the roof of the structure is reminiscent of a wood jetty that spurs off the bike path. Rarely do we have the opportunity to work with an actual resident to shape a design to their very specific desires. I very much enjoyed listening to Stephen Marshall and I hope I have in some way made material the ideas and thoughts he has carried for years. My goal was to be very modest and simple but not just be functional, to try and create one space that touches the soul. The addition includes new space for the existing two units and a third townhouse style unit, which is the first Certified Passive House in Burlington. The new unit is not only modeled net zero CO2e operational energy, but also utilized carbon conscious materials for a low initial CO2e impact. The building, originally built by granite workers in 1913, was a part of the Socialist Labor Party Hall and housed a bakery which supplied bread to local laborers. Their dedication resulted in a modest building for 44 children with an 18-child afterschool program which can also double as a community meeting room. The post Covid doubling of costs resulted in some very serious value engineering, especially in terms of landscaping, finishes and MEP systems but the core design remained. The building is on a donated cornfield on Missile Base Rd. at the edge of town. The adjacent farm includes a decommissioned ICBM missile silo. Transforming a Cold War site into a place for growth felt appropriate. The classrooms and outdoor play area face south. The simple, asymmetrical gabled form reflects the surrounding agrarian landscape. The deeper than typical south overhang provides shade. A carved out porch and adjacent landscaped apse provide a place for informal, social connection as families and staff come and go. The building is somewhat unique because although it is in the village core, the site included a significant amount of farmland with the potential for community gardens, recreation and outdoor concerts. In search of an appropriate use a much needed child care center will become the prime tenant on the main floor along with a small cafe. The second floor becomes two apartments and the ground floor a community center adjacent to the outdoor spaces. A very limited budget available allows a 350sf dwelling with a storage basement. We propose a simple truss roofed shed with a cantilevered porch looking down the gentle slope toward the north, wonderful farmland views and the vines. A large window over the built in couch allows sufficient south light while the north windows engage the porch and vineyard. The little structure is enmeshed in grapevines growing on trellises built from galvanized highway standards so that the dwelling is part of the vineyard geometry. The siting and the angled building were derived by fitting to existing pedestrian walkways, slopes, wetlands and riparian boundaries as wall as breaking down the scale of the structure to harmonize with existing buildings. New common green areas, raised vegetable gardens and an outdoor pavilion create a central gathering space for the entire complex. It was designed in accordance with passive house standards. The building needed to create a strong streetscape in spite of being 15 feet lower than Main St. while preserving a popular local diner and providing a pedestrian path though the site. The organizing idea in that a larger building is carved out around the diner and simultaneously creates the pedestrian link. Fragments of brick were used to connect to the surrounding townscape and define the pedestrian pathway. The masonry mass became the anchor of the addition, and its protected colonnade provides shelter from inclement weather. This entry connects directly to a concrete plaza, intended to minimize the vehicular connection to the rear parking, and to provide a space for communal uses, such as holiday barbeques, or parents supervising their children as they play hopscotch, or learn to ride a bike. The combination of covered entry with colonnade recalls the colonnaded streets of the medieval Tuscan hill-town of Poppi and the Giorgio Vasari colonnade overlooking the Piazza Grande in Arezzo. The 16 acre parcel is close to the village, with seasonal views to the east and ample solar exposure to create a net-zero home. Organized perpendicularly to its gently sloping site, the long axis of the house receives maximum sun, while the change in topography permits the lower level to be used for guest bedrooms and a large exercise space, directly accessing the hot tub and local walking trails. The main floor includes an open plan kitchen/living/dining space connected to two exterior porches and a screened porch; a master bedroom/bath/closet wing; a separated TV/lounge space, and other ancillary uses such as laundry, pantry, etc. Avid pet owners, the mudroom entry includes a tiled dog wash station. The house is all-electric, built to near Passive House standards of insulation, air sealing (.08 CFM/SF), and ventilation with triple glazed windows and doors, with full solar PV complement. The steel and concrete building utilized panelized metal-framed walls with a solid foam-filled cavity. The brick veneer complements other vintage village buildings, including its across the street neighbor which was renovated to serve the Merchants Bank on the first floor and apartments above, in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. For many years, the village celebrated dairy days, including a parade and game of “cow-plop bingo”, whereby the street in front of this building was gridded with chalk into a larger than life bingo card. A local dairy cow would be led around the street, and whichever number it “plopped” on, the lucky person who had picked that number won the monetary prize! Rita Markley, then ED of COTS (Committee On Temporary Shelter), convened a meeting with Bob Duncan of DWA and Jeanne Morrissey of JAM, Inc. to review the building and press forward on an all-volunteer project to create emergency shelter space before winter’s end. The second floor included a kitchen area, large ballroom, and ancillary spaces such as storage and bathrooms; the first floor was composed of smaller spaces (the Club’s former bar, billiards room, etc.), so the second floor was designated for families and the first for singles. The ballroom was divided into 12x12 rooms around a central “piazza” space and some smaller study and work spaces. Rooms did not have enclosed ceilings, so as to better utilize mechanical and ventilation systems, knowing this use would be temporary. JAM, Inc. donated supervisory and carpentry work, along with nearly all of the materials. Each room had a canopy at its entrance, each of them different and designed by staff of DWA and other Burlington architects. Facades of the rooms were finished with typical exterior materials to create a village streetscape. Many community members joined in to build, paint and finish the spaces, and JAM, Inc. was able to solicit many other local businesses to contribute as well.
