Replace antiquated rest areas with new centers that beckon travelers to stop, learn and be tempted to see more of Vermont. The goal is to provide information as well as bathrooms. The site and buildings should communicate the idea that Vermont respects historical tradition and modern life at the same time. Provide separate truck and car parking, picnic area, information area, support areas, and bathrooms, including a ‘flex’ bathroom to be used at busy times or when the others are being cleaned.
Abstract agricultural elements shape the design from the landscape and building forms down to display millwork details. The site is organized around overscaled furrows, hedgerows, orchards, tractor picnic tables and stone walls. The building is a barn added onto over time with each architectural element reflecting an internal function and featuring an exposed roof structure. The displays recall farm machinery. The detailing, especially the glazing, is crisp and injects a modern sensibility into traditional forms. Vermont brick, slate, granite, maple, ash and cherry are used throughout.
