Design Architect / Principal: Michael Wisniewski
A mill that burned many years ago once sat on this site which was very narrow, steep and had access and parking problems but was in the historic city core and had dramatic, south facing Winooski River views. The problem was how to provide river views for all the units in a building that naturally laid out as having a central corridor.
Le Corbusier's Habitat section was appropriated with two story units wrapping a single corridor: Lower units with living and terrace on river; upper units with living and one BR overlooking the river. The brick vaneer was treated as a ruin into which a new wood structure was inserted, referencing the ghost of the mill. Access bridge projections on one side are expressed as voids on the other which modulate the rhythm and allow for alternate unit arrangements.
