MORE INFO2006 Middlebury, VT
Home in established village neighborhood bordering Middlebury College. Budget withheld.
Principal: Bob Duncan
Design a new single family home on a small village site. Owners' desire was to build as small as possible, in a cottage style, building as green wherever possible. The program includes a guest room to be used as a B & B, site plan to maintain open garden space, and house to provide welcoming presence and relationship to the street.
Cottage style implies small scale, friendly forms, variety of materials. The design presents two equal sized gable ends fronting the street, linked by a connector of office, bathrooms, mudroom and laundry room. One gable is clearly the main entrance, with its peaked roof over the door/porch, the other is the two car garage, set back slightly from the first to indicate its diminished importance. All bedrooms are on the second floor, with the master enjoying seasonal views of Breadloaf Mountain to the east and the Middlebury Arts center to the west.
