GrassCube
MORE INFOX
2008 East Middlebury, VT
1,200 - 1,700 sf, Cost: TBD
Principal: Michael Wisniewski
GrassCube is a research project. Countless numbers of clever people have tried to devise a system leading to less expensive construction and they all founder on the reality's shoals. Now it is our turn. We don't pretend to be revolutionary but this nascent research may lead to some modest discoveries. Now there is even the possibility of a real site in East Middlebury for the Addison County Community Trust.
The basis of Grass Cube is that material costs money; therefore savings could be realized by reducing size, detail and systems. We begin with a cube as enclosing the most space for amount of surface area and proceed from there. The grass roof reduces storm water and serves as a basis for solar panels oriented in any direction. In eliminating everything extraneous can we still create a home people would want to live in? Stay tuned. See our blog for the Grass Cube Manifesto; a more detailed exposition.
