Andy Miller
Often I tell people that I get paid to 'doodle' but it is really much more than that in my mind. Architecture allows me the opportunity to examine the relationships between people and places. The spaces we inhabit are all embedded with cultural values, technologies and physical characteristics that help shape the form of our environment. Sometimes the relationships between these elements are so well (or poorly) designed that they create spaces and experiences that leave imprints on us that are long-lasting. Sometimes these impressions are so strong that they even become the identity of a place. That idea of place-making is a common thread throughout my work.
I spent a good deal of time pursuing these interests informally in the hayloft of our family barn watching the sun spill through the cracks in the siding and catch the dust in the air but my formal studies started as an undergraduate, took me abroad to europe and then ultimately to the west coast for my graduate work. Through these studies the questions that I had been asking intuitively were clarified into a way seeing the world around me as a series of relationships between the physical and social aspects of sites. I expanded on these ideas during my graduate work by examining the role technology and micro-climates play in shaping our relationship with the built environment and how we can use them to strengthen those relationships. It was also there that I started to understand how to work with the inherent qualities of sites in conjunction with the unique characteristic of each client to create forms specific to their surroundings and circumstances.
In 2003 I moved to Burlington to be closer to family and today I live in the south end of town and enjoy dining on Church Street, swimming in the lake and waiting for the next big winter storm. I have been 'doodling' with Michael and Bob since 2004 and have had the good fortune of sharing in their desire to do work that is both aesthetically and socially relevant.
